Double Butte Cemetery, established in 1888, is one of Tempe, Arizona's oldest cemeteries. The property was donated by Niels Peterson, a prominent local settler, and was initially managed by the Tempe Cemetery Association.
During the Great Depression, financial struggles led to the grounds being poorly maintained. In 1958, the City of Tempe took over management to ensure better upkeep.
