Collection: Double Butte Cemetery - Tempe
Double Butte Cemetery, established in 1888, is one of Tempe, Arizona's oldest cemeteries. Located near the Double Butte Mountain, the cemetery initially served as an informal burial site before being officially designated. The property was donated by Niels Peterson, a prominent local settler, and was initially managed by the Tempe Cemetery Association.
During the Great Depression, financial struggles led to the grounds being poorly maintained. In 1958, the City of Tempe took over management to ensure better upkeep. Today, the cemetery reflects Tempe's diverse cultural and historical heritage, with many notable individuals from the community buried there. Its natural landscaping integrates the desert environment with a serene atmosphere suitable for remembrance and reflection.
