Collection: Fairview Cemetery - Van Buren
Fairview Cemetery in Van Buren, Arkansas, is the oldest public cemetery in the city and Crawford County. It was first used for burials in 1816, with the land officially donated by John Drennen, one of Van Buren's founders, in 1837. The cemetery was formally established in 1846 and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It features various historical burial markers, including Victorian and Egyptian Revival designs.
The cemetery serves as the final resting place for prominent settlers, judges, politicians, and over 400 unknown Confederate soldiers. It has historical significance tied to the Civil War, including its use during the Battle of Prairie Grove, where Confederate soldiers retreated to Van Buren. A Confederate section and memorial recognize these soldiers. Additionally, Fairview Cemetery contains unmarked graves of African Americans and other notable figures from the region's history.
