Laurel Hill Cemetery - Des Moines

Laurel Hill Cemetery, located east of downtown Des Moines near the Iowa State Fairgrounds, was established in 1907 and spans 60 scenic acres. With nearly 30,000 interments, it remains an active cemetery with space available for the next 40-50 years. A highlight of the cemetery is the "Avenue of Flags," which has been a Memorial Day tradition since 1971, attracting over 2,700 vehicles during the holiday weekend.

Among those buried here are notable figures like John Heath, a Buffalo Soldier who served in the Civil War, and Iowa's oldest resident, Nellie Cross, who lived to be 112. Laurel Hill Cemetery continues to honor veterans and preserve its rich history while providing various burial service options.
