Collection: Memorial Park Cemetery - Lawrence

Memorial Park Cemetery was established in 1926. It was designed to look like an urban park and graves are marked with small monuments at the ground level rather than larger, more obtrusive monuments in order to emphasize the open landscape. The cemetery also contains a memorial dedicated to James Naismith and others associated with basketball at the University of Kansas.

The City of Lawrence began maintaining Memorial Park in May 2005, when a Douglas County District Court judge found the property to be in disrepair. Ownership of the cemetery was transferred to the city in March 2008 as part of the settlement of a lawsuit.
