Collection: Oakwood Cemetery - La Salle
Established in 1874, historic Oakwood Cemetery was formed in response to the City of La Salle's rapid growth and need for additional cemetery space. The rural cemetery movement, which inspired the building of cemeteries on the outskirts of towns in tranquil, park-like settings, was prevalent at the time and undoubtedly influenced the site selection and unique concentric circular layout of Oakwood on the north in contrast to the rectangular section on the south. Oakwood Cemetery Association of La Salle owns and maintains the Cemetery which is overseen by a board of trustees. Present day trustees of Oakwood are committed to preserving this tradition of a peaceful, natural setting for quiet reflection and remembrance of loved ones.
Neighboring Rockwell Cemetery, located on the east side of the lane leading into Oakwood, dates at least as far back as 1836 and filled quickly.
