Collection: Woodlawn (Maxville) Cemetery - Farmland

“Maxville Cemetery” was started in 1818. Land was purchased from Native Americans, who gave possession in 1821. Death visited the homes of early settlers then, the same as it comes to our homes today. One of the first tasks was to lay out a graveyard. The first burial ground was not large: it was only the northwest corner of what is now known as Maxville Cemetery.” The first to be laid to rest under the shade of the wood lawn trees was the infant of Robinson McIntire, who passed August 18, 1924. There is a small humble stone which marks the child’s grave. The second person was known as “Granny Driver.” The first documented tombstone in the cemetery was a marble slab erected to the memory of Joab McNees, who dies in 1833. After a while the cemetery became too small.
